Art and the City – You are not alone!

Panel Abstract:
The world is urbanizing quickly and its growing cities seem to be dominated by evils: environmental degradation, social polarization, political violence... But cities are also a sight of hope – when we all live in the same place the contradictions of contemporary capitalism become visible to everyone. While political, social, and economic differences tend to isolate social groups from one another the city (at its best) brings them back into dialogue. Manual Castells described this capability of cities in the late 1970s. What has become of this potential today? While new individually-targeted online media seems to be undermining this potential, street art and public performances continue to remind us that we are not alone.
