Feminist Marxism in Theory and Practice

Panel Abstract:

The theory and practice of the left has historically focused on class struggles in which gender issues often take a supportive, but separate role. Gender and class are historically and practically interwoven: capital emerged on the basis of subordination of women. The theory and pratice of the left must move to a unified struggle against capitalist patriarchy. This panel explores efforts to provide a basis for this struggle. The presenters will: (1) show how capital embodies gender through the work of Maria Mies, Silvia Federici and others. (2) Provide a feminist critique of Marx's concept of value. (3) Explore the "indigenous feminism" that underlies the Zapatista movement. (4)Examine the gender divisions that undermine the potential of creative (non-value) production to create anti-capitalist solidarity. (5) Discuss the contributions of feminist-Marxist theorists to create an integrated theory and its implications for activism.
