Low-Brow Left: Spreading The Word With F-bombs, Oily Mermaids and Clowns On Bikes

Panel Abstract:
In this roundtable we will examine how activists used populist symbols and visuals in 2010 reach mainstream media outlets and audiences. How do we navigate ever-shorter soundbites and tiny frames of debate to engage a populace flooded with right-wing mythology on every issue? How do we use humor, provocative images, and pop culture to satisfy news editors and casual viewers without diluting our message beyond recognition? Is the era of "reality TV" and YouTube creating more space for creative messaging or demanding the design of more ostentatious actions with diminishing returns? We will explore the victories and limitations of populist media strategies in the past year, while discussing where we drew inspiration for campaigns. Finally, the group will look at the biggest issues of 2011 and brainstorm strategies for bringing them to a wider audience.
