The World Social Forum in Dakar: Towards New Universalisms?

Panel Abstract:

One of the key themes of the 2011 World Social Forum in Dakar concerned the quest for new universalisms in response to the crisis of civilization. The Forum aspired to developing alternative paradigms for the crisis of hegemonic civilization of modernity through de-coloniality and socialization of power, especially in the relations between state-market-society; the collective rights of peoples, the de-commodification of life and “development”; the emergence of alternative subjectivities and epistemologies that confront racism, Eurocentrism, patriarchy and anthropocentrism. This panel assesses the WSF's success in producing alternatives to the crisis of the hegemonic form of modern civilization.
