Abstract:
The Bronx, especially its southern half, is the epicenter of poverty and inequality ravaging the U.S. Here unemployment, homelessness, HIV/AIDS, and the crisis in educational and health services have converged. Yet grass movements for uplift and social change are everywhere, even if not acknowledged or celebrated by the mainstream media.
This panel, comprised of activists in the "Take Back the Bronx" movement, will discuss examples of these initiatives in the areas of immigrant organizing, ex-inmate community reintegration, community gardens, and anti-racism organizing.
