Thank you for your interest in volunteering for this year's Left Forum. We rely heavily on volunteers to run the conference and ensure a smooth flow of local and international attendees, panels and panelists.
Volunteer roles and time slots are described below. When you complete the Volunteer Form you will receive an automatic confirmation and a follow-up email inviting you to attend one of our pre-conference Training sessions. Left Forum volunteers will receive:
one 3-day conference pass ($80 value);
reserved seats at all Plenaries;
light snacks and beverages (during your shift)
20% discount on select Exhibitor merchandise (Sunday morning shift only)
If you have any questions, please contact Claudia at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Volunteer Training Session
Attendance at the Left Forum Volunteer Training Session is highly recommended. While not mandatory, we strongly recommend that all volunteers attend Training as there will be limited time for on-site training during the event. Two options are being offered: Tuesday, May 29 or Wednesday, May 30. Training will run from 6 to 7:30pm, with pizza and beverages served. A third option may be offered in the morning on May 29 or May 30 if needed to accomodate a sufficient number of volunteers. Training will take place at the Left Forum office, 365 Fifth Avenue (between 34th and 35th streets). After you complete this Volunteer Form and select your role and day/time slot, you will receive a separate email inviting you to participate in a Training session.

Volunteers will check-in and register attendees, panelists, performers, etc. This is a simple yet vital role that requires no technical expertise. Most importantly you should be personable and welcoming, with good communication skills to answer questions from those who are registering. Registration volunteers generally remain seated throughout their shift.

Saturday Registration 8:15am - 12:30pm
Saturday Registration 12:00pm - 4:15pm

Speaker/Panelist Tech Set-Up
Volunteeers assist with computer and project set-up at the beginning of each panel session. Although these volunteers must be on their feet while working, they often have down-time between sessions. Tech Set-Up volunteeers should be comfortable with tasks like turning on the computer, turning on the projector and plugging in a flash drive for panel speakers. Since you will not be responsible for any troubleshooting beyond these basic tasks, a supervisory Tech volunteer will be on call to handle more serious tech problems should they arise. Technology used at the Left Forum (at John Jay College) will be reviewed in the Volunteer Training session (see above), but you are welcome to review the guide in advance here.
