Description/Abstract of your Event:

The disability community is disproportionately impacted by disasters, yet we are systemically left out of emergency planning, response, and recovery activities. With intensifying climate change and political upheaval, disabled lives are more at risk than ever before. The disability community is organizing to rise up and flip the paradigm and develop new infrastructure that will ensure equal access to all emergency decision-making and resources. In this panel, we'll discuss disability-led disaster initiatives that fuse political organizing with direct action and media activism to create a new emergency management infrastructure. Our work, including the Real Emergency Access for Aging and Disability Inclusion in Disasters Act (REAADI), Disaster Relief Medicaid Act (DRM), and on a global level, the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction, dismantles barriers and hardships faced by people with disabilities, forms alliances, and builds a future that will ensure all emergency activities and laws develop with the engagement of disability and aging communities and will include mechanisms to protect our civil rights in disasters.
