Abstract:
The members of this panel will draw on their long experience of writing and organizing on the front of Southern African liberation from white-minority rule and apartheid to try to draw out the most salient lessons to be learned from that experience. The panel will assess both the success and failure of such undertakings (the overcoming of White Power but the reinforcement of global capitalist hegemony throughout the region, for example!) while also appraising the different strategies and tactics adopted in pursuing such liberation-support activities. With the assistance of the audience the session will also seek to focus the lessons of this “liberation support” moment for movement-building at the present time, both quite specifically (the various anti-Israeli apartheid mobilization efforts, for example) as well as more generally (vis-a-vis the Trump presidency!).
